Hi Paul - yes, if you really are up against competitors - though I'd argue there's often no need.

When I talk to the majority of my clients (consultants and coaches) and ask them who they find themselves up against when trying to win work, more often than not the answer is no one.

They're essentially competing against the client doing nothing, or trying to do it themselves.

So they're best of talking to the client about why they should do it at all, and why they need help. Any time spent differentiating themselves from non-existant competition is wasted.

Ian I agree with you 100% on focusing on what the prospective customer wants and needs but anyone genuinely different in a high value area would be missing a big opportunity if they don't identify the uniqueness and provide proof.

Ian,

A great posting and, as usual, you hit the nail bang on the head. It's easy to get carried away in the excitement of the moment and start talking about ourselves.

My daughter brings me back to earth if ever she hears me doing this with a cute girly-voice exclamation, directed at me, of "I'm so special!". Humbling to have a 7 year old pick me up for being too excited by myself.

I love the new picture too, far more relaxed looking, you're obviously making big sales :-)
