Within the word "authority" there is this other word "author". Someone who is a creator. So for me, to have authority is to be able to create knowledge....something new...never seen before...or elsewhere. Something unique. The expert learns from others...from "authors".
And there is this other meaning: to be someone who others listen to. If someone has authority, they have a quality which makes other people take notice of what they say.

Go on Ian, do the 2 x 2 matrix.

I want to know what names you're going to give to the categories, especially the poor deluded fool with no expertise and who no one pays attention to.

Great posts Ian. My first visit to the blog and Im a fan.

I think your right in stressing the Influence side of things. Our end goal in sales and marketing is "Action". We can persuade and appear authoritative, but its influence that encourages action.

Ian - very well said. I would add that guiding your prospects to action is why sales and marketing have jobs. The ability to influence is critical to your success. I'm shocked at how few companies teach sales professionals how to influence customers and move then to action.

Ian-
I think you are making a very valuable point. Importantly, you are not only making the point but also illustrating it by your clear and persuasive style. Well done...lwf
